Hashi.org Awarded 501c3 Tax-exempt Status

April, 2009 - Last month, hashi.org was awarded 501c3 tax-exempt status by the IRS. The long, complicated process took 2 years but the advantages make it well worth the effort.
By comparison, filing to create a "non-profit organization" is relatively easy, and there is little oversight by the government. But the true advantages of creating an NPO only come with the 501c3 status. For example:
1. Can accept tax-deductible donations
2. Pays no income tax
My great hope is that not only will it relieve me of being the sole contributor to the scholarships and expenses we incur, but that the donations we receive will enable us to offer more scholarships each year. It breaks my heart to receive so many worthy applications, and have to choose just one during each application period.
Soon, we will put up a donation webpage on our site, and encourage all to give to the cause of reaching out with the hand of friendship in this world.

Hashi.org Announces Korean Scholarship 2008 Winner

11/01/08 - Hashi.org is proud to announce the winner of the 2nd annual Travel Scholarship to a Korean citizen! The number of applications received far exceeded previous application periods, and we received many, fine applications, with essays describing a variety of backgrounds – International Studies, Translation, Engineering, Mathematics, etc. – and cultural exchange interests – Student exchange, Language studies, Grad studies and research, etc. But our winner is a Korean Grad Student who is presently studying Japanese art and architecture at USC in California. As part of her dissertation, she will be traveling to Japan later this year to do research. After graduation, she plans on teaching in both South Korea and the US, in an effort to bring about greater cultural understanding between the three countries.
Our judges of the applications found this scholarship decision the hardest one yet. With so many worthy applicants, with admirable accomplishments and aspirations, it was extremely difficult to choose just one. But the winner’s application proved to be the finest example of the ideals and goals of hashi.org. While there were many worthy submissions, Hashi.org is proud to award a $1,000 travel scholarship to Hyunjung Cho! Congratulations!

이 중, 선발된 장학생은 현재 캘리포니아, USC(University of Southern California: 남가주대학교)에서 일본예술/건축을 전공하는 대학원생입니다.

Japanese Scholarship Winner Returns From America

Our 2008 Japanese Scholarship winner - Kaumasa Honda - has just returned to Japan after his trip to America. He went with a group from his college for a 2-week intensive language workshop in New York, and was able to make inroads here that he will use in his upcoming studies. We were gratified to receive this letter from him recently.

--------------------------------------------------------

Dear Hashi,org;

I hope is everything well with you.
I appreciate your support for 2008 Hofstra University Summer ESL Program by Tokyo Future University. It was my first trip abroad and I was a little nervous when I left Japan. The kind support and help enabled me to complete the two-week stay in America without any problems.
I have gained lots of knowledge and experience, which would have been unobtainable in Japan.
I will certainly apply what I have learned in America when I go to abroad again in the future, as well as put it to good use in my daily life.

I greatly appreciate the invaluable experience.

Sincerely, Kazumasa Honda
